Does it ever snow in AfricaByThread Owner
Does it ever snow in Africa, specifically Southern Africa. I would like to know just out of interest. I know that many parts of Africa are very dry and arid but does it ever get cold enough to snow in any countries?

Snow is not a rarity in South Africa, however it does not snow to the extent it does in the UK, USA and parts of Europe.

In the western cape we see snow on the mountain tops and sometimes in areas such as Ceres a farming area. This usually happens during our winter time.

In the KZN region (durban surround) it snows on the drakensberg mountains, and in the Gauteng (Johannesberg regions) light flakes are experienced but still makes the air freezing cold.

Snowflakes are a rare commodity in Johannesburg, even during winter. South African Weather Service records show it has snowed in Johannesburg on only 22 other days in the last 103 years. The last snow fell there in June 2007and August 2012 .

We do sometimes get snow in South Africa - Lesotho has received snow in the last couple of years. Lydenburg, Gauteng and Cape Town have all seen snow also the Drakensburg Mountains quite often have snow ontop. We also have ice storms, one minute it can been bright sunshine and extremely hot and then we have a cloud burst and ice in large quaunity falls and runs like a river of ice. We also have hail storms where the ice can be as big as a tennise ball, causes a lot of damage to cars

yes it does in certain places like south africa but closer to the equator it does not snow as the tempretures and humidity do not allow for cold. as in all countries the high mountain ranges get snow every winter. the lower regions where most people live are generally snow free

Indeed, yes it does. We have certain mountainous areas in South Africa where we expect annual snowfall like the Drakensberg Moutains in Kwa-Zulu Natal. However, our amount of snowfall is not comparable with e.g Canada, Alaska or even the UK as we do have a lot more of a dry and warm climate than any of the mentioned countries.

Yes, A fellow teacher from South Africa, who taught with me at a University in China, told me that it snows once in awhile on the southern coast of South Africa, up to 3 inches in some cases. I also read on the internet 4 years ago that it had snowed during the month of December.
