How should you inspect a used car before buying? I plan on buying a used car for my Son, I am a lady and have no clue as to what to look out for, besides for checking for obvious damage to the body what should I ask the seller or check on the engine?

YES, look at it physically, look under the hood at the engine. the engine should be just as dirty as the rest of under the hood if you see really clean parts ask why? was there something replaced? Start the car - hows it sound? did it start up right away? Mileage- if it is under 100K you should get a pretty good deal on it because car lots cant sell a car over 100K miles on it with out a really good deal. Look under neath the car if there are any oil leaks- if the car been sitting for a little while it probably will leak some oil. And ask if maintenance has bee done on it. Two easy things to do is look at the blue book value on line and get a car fax report on it. (the dealer may provide this)

First off check out carfax it cost$ but is good for a month and you can research unlimited vehicles. You will need the vin# located in the front windshield by the bottom. It is a plate with serried of numbers and letters. Enter the vin# and search for wrecks previous sale prices salvaged title and more. The other option is to look at the oil dipstick. If it is clean and the oil looks like honey and dose not smell burnt you have an engine that was maintained. Look for leaks under car. Leaks are bad. And unusual wear on tires are bad as well. Hope this helps

If you are looking to buy a used car i would first take it for a test drive, see if it handles the road ok any kind of noises it might make and see how well the car does. If you know any mechanics or someone that has a garage that works on cars then stop and ask if they could look it over for you to see a prfessional point of view. I often will have them check and most of the time will tell me if they see or hear anything that could be bad with it. I hope this will help and good luck.

ask for a carfax report (usually sellers get it if they are clean). it should show any accidents.

take a test drive around the block. Observe any abnormal noises.

take a drive on freeway and check out acceleration variations.

if you are ready to take it, ask for sellers approval for a verification by a car mechanic.

Always ask the dealer or seller for the carfacts of the vehicle. If you are not buying from a car lot or dealer, look for mileage of 100k to 120k for a vehicle that is 10 years old. Also look for one previous owner of the vehicle. Take the vehicle to a reputable mechanic and ask that he/she check for transmission and engine problems first as is these are the most expensive repairs to a vehicle. Check radiator and cooling system, and last but not least check for bald tires on the vehicle because this can be a bargaining tool for you.

How should you inspect a used car before buying?ByKatrina Wilson Smith
There are many ways you should inspect a car before buying it. Firstly you should look at the body work making sure there are no major imperfections or dents or scratches or any apparent faults like loose exhaust pipes, broken wing mirrors or missing registration plates. You should also check that the car has a full service history and a valid mot document
