What skills do you need as a bookkeeper?
You need to be able to understand Debits and Credits as well as know which account should be debited for what transactions. You should also know how to process payroll as well as payroll taxes and sales taxes. if you are dealing with AP and AR you should know how to process a Bill which includes coding it as well as you should know how to create invoices as well as how to accept payments in the system.
What tips can you give to anyone doing their own books?
Always keep your receipts so that when you give review over to your Accountant you can be sure that all transactions have been recorded. Be sure that you record all transactions correctly. Meaning that you code your invoices using the correct code. You should also when invoicing your clients make sure that all line items are done correctly and that when reciving funds for that invoice they are recorded to the correct invoice.
Useful software packages for bookkeepers?
The most useful software packages are the following if the client wants to use books at the same time that the accountant/bookkkeper is using software than we get QBO. if they dont want that then they should get quickbooks desktop. Also if that is case make sure that you have access to system so that you camn takle an accountants copy.
How do you become a certified bookkeeper?
To become a certified bookkeeper you are required to take a test. This test is so that you can prove that you have the knowledge to be able to do other peoples books. Not all bookkeepers have this certificate. Most dont because of the price of taking this test.
Could you describe a bookkeepers duties?
A bookkeepers duties range from creating the quickbooks company and then on a weekly basis entering all bills that came in that week and then making sure that all bills were paid that are do. They also at times run payroll and after payroll is done they make sure that all transactions were recorded into the system. They also do a reconciliation of the bank accounts to make sure that all transactions on bank statement are in the bank register.
